OMG I get to train with Jasmine Star!! | Los Angeles Wedding Photographer

So I totally believe in miracles and the universe helping to manifest whatever dreams you may have. I remember long ago when I was first starting my business and living in Jersey thinking to myself “One day I want to have a workshop with Jasmine Star in Orange County…that would be so crazy awesome!” Never did I think I’d move 3000 miles away from home to Los Angeles and six months later, wake up to an email saying my photographic idol is having a workshop just an hour away from me! I know you’re going to be reading this Jasmine…seriously…I connect with you on SO many levels and I owe my dedication and perseverance to seeing you grow in your business…so thank you for sharing your story with us!

For those of you who don’t know Jasmine Star, well there’s so much to say. She’s an internationally known wedding photographer who not only inspires other photographers to do their best and put themselves out there, but she instills such a sense of community for us as photographers. I’ve always been one to lend a hand wherever I could to whomever I could, but Jasmine inspires me to take it to another level. I’ve always been of the mentality that there is more than enough work to go around…can you imagine just in the Los Angeles area alone how many weddings take place per weekend? Why should we then fear our so called competition? If anything, I have learned to embrace other photographers and to learn from them and give back with any feedback or information I have.

So August 20th I’ll be fully immersed in everything Jasmine has to say and offer us. I can’t say I won’t shed a tear as we all have so much to share, from hopes and dreams, to fears of never becoming successful. I know I’ll walk away a better photographer and businesswoman. If you’re curious to check out Jasmine, here’s a link to her site: http://jasmine-star.com/.

Thanks so much Jasmine! Looking forward to see you in the OC! XOXOXO

Understanding Your Wedding Photography Investment | LA Wedding Photographer

Wedding season is in full swing and many newly engaged couples are now looking for their wedding vendors for their 2013 and 2014 weddings. Many couples choose to have their weddings photographed by professional wedding photographers but do not know why wedding photography costs what it does and what goes into the backend of the work that is produced for them. I hope to provide you with an understanding of  how much work, time and financial investment wedding photographers put into the final product that is provided to couples. This is meant so that couples can understand the value behind the art that photographers are creating and why their wedding photography investment is a substantial portion of their wedding budget.

Our jobs as photographers has been greatly glorified by the media and shows like America’s Next Top Model. Everyone seems to have this glorified view of what our jobs are like. We all sit at our computers all week in our pj’s, then work an 8 hour day on a wedding day and suddenly make a ton of money. Unfortunately, that is not how the world of photography business works.

On top of being photographers, we are small business owners. We have the responsibility of marketing our businesses, managing clients, creating our own websites, being our own IT department, mentoring others, learning on a constant basis, blogging, facebooking, researching, and the list goes on.

There are many uncle Bob’s and mom’s with cameras out there who claim to be professionals. Wedding photographers spend thousands of dollars and even more time in education, training, attending seminars, etc. to bring our clients the best creative genius we can. That’s only the start of it.

So once we have all this knowledge, what happens next? That beautiful album that couples receive, the software used cost about $500 just to design it. Those beautifully edited photos which require programs of the likes of Photoshop which costs thousands of dollars and photo management programs such as Lightroom and Aperture. Why not also add some effects with OnOne Perfect Photo Suite. None of this is inexpensive. Every year or couple of months there are updates. Yes, wedding photographers always update and that too costs money depending on the program.

The wedding reception venues asks wedding photographers to provide proof of insurance. That professional liability insurance is not inexpensive. Not to mention the equipment insurance because replacing one of those Canon 5D Mark III’s would be the cost of a wedding shoot for many photographers and then some.

Photographer’s who take themselves seriously all register as businesses in their state. They also owe taxes to Uncle Sam.

Couples may have found their photographer through a wedding directory via a google search. It costs money for to advertise on those sites. That beautiful website where photographers host their pictures are also charging a yearly fee. There is also a yearly subscription fee to the site that hosts the website and product orders.

That is just a quick recap of what wedding photographers have to maintain in order to keep their businesses up and running. This is where the fun part begins.

Roni & Zach’s Wedding, Five Crowns, Newport Beach, CA Traditional Wedding | Newport Beach Wedding Photographer

I had the honor and privilege to be a part of Roni and Zach’s special day on March 24th at Five Crowns in Newport Beach, California. The venue (Five Crowns) was so quaint and had a lovely traditional English cottage feel to it. I think this would be a great spot for brides who really love tradition and are also looking for a rustic English setting for their wedding.

Every room has a grand fireplace and tons of wooden accents on the walls and decor. It literally feels like you are stepping into the 1800′s. Roni and Zach’s ceremony took place in the lovely outdoor garden in the back of the venue. It had an arbor with flowers and a very private feeling to the spot. If any other wedding or event takes place on your day, this area is pretty secluded so you wouldn’t have to worry about unwanted guests coming to check out your party:)

The location of Five Crowns itself lends itself well to any out of town guests you may have as hotels are a mere 3 miles away. The main street area is also nearby with tons of shopping and restaurants. The coordinator whom I worked with was extremely well organized and ready to assist whenever we needed.

But that’s enough about how great this location is…Roni & Zach’s wedding went down without a hitch! The weather was perfect, the food was divine, and their love just emanated so strongly throughout their day. Toni was such a calm bride! It always makes me smile when I have a calm bride because it does make my day go so much smoother. She was up for anything we wanted to do with the images. I think she really was just happy to be getting married to the man of her dreams, anything else was just the icing on the already amazing cake she would be eating!

Zach’s expression when he first set his eyes on Roni was something I will never forget. It was as if he was amazed and relieved all at the same time. His Best Man definitely gave light to this during his speech when he mentioned how they were all thrilled he had found Roni. Sometimes love doesn’t come as quickly as we want it to, but when it finally arrives, it’s better than we could have ever hoped for.

Once the ceremony was over, the guests were greeted with a wonderful 3 course meal and some delicious cake….oh my that cake was so sweet! I really enjoyed taking pictures of it, too! Well enough of my rambling, check out the pictures!

It’s all in the details of your wedding | Los Angeles Wedding Photographer

I love Pinterest just as much as you do and believe me when it comes to shooting your wedding, I am in awe at how much time you’ve taken to put all these beautiful details together.

From your shoes that say “I Do” on the soles, to place cards, to the bird cage that holds your gifts, to the way the plates were laid out, all of these items and details catch the spirit of the day for your Los Angeles wedding.

When we are shooting your wedding, you’ll notice that I may be taking lots of close up shots of these details. It may seem trivial at the time, and you may be thinking “what is that nutty photographer up to?” haha! Trust me, there is sanity in our madness. When we are putting together your wedding albums, it’s so much fun to make collages with these types of images. It’s basically like Pinterest is coming to life right in front of us!

During the process of booking with Edith L Photography, we’ll go over many details of your wedding and a new thing that we recently implemented is the Edith L Photography experience. Basically, I want to see your wedding through your eyes, with a twist of my creativity. I want you to understand my vision, and I want to know the types of emotions you want to experience when looking at your wedding album for the first or 55th time. Details are a large part of capturing the essence of your wedding in Los Angeles.

If there is anything special or sacred that is part of your wedding, that is something I will want to know as your photographer. This way I know to capture this special arch that dad made, or the pearls your grandmother gave you. All of this comes through good communication, a style survey that we are newly implementing, and also lots of stylized Pinterest Boards that are dedicated to your wedding alone.

On the day of your wedding, there will be no question as to what I should be taking images of. We will have already discussed this multiple times. Our initial consultations, site visits, engagement sessions, emails, phone calls, survey reviews, and constant pinning, will ensure we are all on the same “wedding” page!
